What is Boudoir Photography?
A woman in a red teddy lays on her stomach looking at the camera. Her left hand is in her hair.

Alright, so I’ve shouted from the rooftops for a while now that I’m a boudoir photographer. I shoot boudoir! I love being a boudoir photographer!!

But, like, what does that even mean? What is boudoir photography? Is it just as simple as taking pictures of women in their underwear?

Boudoir is Much More Than Nudes

To put it bluntly, no, boudoir photography isn’t as simple as taking pictures of women in their underwear. First off, I photograph more than just women. Guys, gals, and nonbinary pals are more than welcome to step in front of the camera.

And, yeah, sure, there’s usually underwear involved. But sometimes there’s less. And sometimes there’s more!

It’s More About a Feeling

For me, I call myself a boudoir photographer because it’s an easy box for folks to put me in. They know that the work I do is sensitive in some way and it usually involves a little extra effort on their part.

I love this box, okay? It means no one ever asks me to take pictures of their kids. I love kids. I’m just not meant to be a family photographer.

But in order to fully understand the kind of work I do, I kind of have to step out of that box a little bit. Because I don’t just want to shoot pictures of folks in their undies.

Undies are great, I think butts are awesome, but I’m looking for a feeling.

I want to take pictures of people who are vulnerable. I want to capture an emotion that you’ve never been able to see yourself sit with before. I want to turn my camera around and for you to feel a little surprised at yourself because you never knew you could look like that.

I especially love this because you absolutely DO look like that. You just never get to see it.

It’s About Empowerment

Another part of my self-bestowed job title is “body empowerment coach” which is just a fancy way of saying that I know how body shame works and I think I have the right tools to help guide you through it.

Before, during, and after your photoshoot, I will be right beside you. Why? Because I know what it feels like to be uncomfortable in your own skin. And stripping down your walls (and clothes) means that you’re confronting those issues you have with your body head-on.

I can comfortably say that I know you have body image issues. How do I know? Because we live in a world where the media (both social and otherwise) literally tells us that we should.

All of us. No matter what you look like.

I think that’s bullshit. So, I’m trying to change that, one client at a time.

Right, So… What is Boudoir Photography?

Boudoir photography is a nice cross between fashion photos and private photos. It’s a chance for you to spend some time in a hair and makeup chair, put on some sexy (or sultry, or comfy) outfits (or, you know, nothin’ at all), and get connected with yourself again.

I like to think that working with me has an advantage over working with the average photographer. I focus my work around body inclusivity, acceptance, and radical self-love. I have processes in place to help you get ready before your shoot and to help guide you through the process of looking at your finished photos. I try to help you learn how to stop being so mean to yourself and start appreciating your body for all the kickass stuff it did to get you here.

So, for me, boudoir photography is a lot more than a profession or a trade. It’s kinda my calling?

(also, lots of butts, which is a huge plus.)
